Careful choosing "Natural" products if you have skin issues

Take a close look at products deemed Handmade, or Natural. Often on the products website you will find looking earthy with pictures of nature.  However, look closely at the ingredient list, not just the active ingredients, or the "bold" ingredients and you will likely find chemicals-often with the term safe synthetic. These synthetic ingredients can cause an irritation, that will keep you in a cycle of buying more products and can be a  health threat. These chemicals are are advantageous to the manufacturer but hold little

advantage for your skin care and can often attribute to mild eczema and skin irritation.

Although products may contain some natural ingredients, the inclusion of the chemicals off sets any benefit. There are many good pure natural products on the market that are suitable for those with eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis. Many like ours, at  Saltysoaps are more affordable then mass produced soaps and lotions. At first it takes a little detective work.  We suggest you print out the list below and keep in handy by your computer or in your wallet.

Disodium-EDTA  is a salt used in cosmetics and personal care products, that improves the performance of cleansing products. It is found in contact solution, eye drops, shower and bath products, and more. High doses have been shown in some studies to disrupt hormone function and mutate cells. This synthetic ingredient has poor biodegradability, and could lead to sensitization of the skin

TEA cocoyl glutamate, often used as a foaming agent can irritant skin. Most importantly when combined with certain preservatives, TEA can contain nitrosamines as the formula begins to breaks down.  Nitrosamines are  prohibited from use in Canadian cosmetics because of the strong evidence linking them with cancer. Animal studies also show reproductive problems at very low doses of nitrosamines.

Triclosan an antibacterial and antifungal agent present in all kinds of personal care, home care, and dental products. It can cause skin irritation, has been linked to hormone imbalance and liver disruption. Triclosan has a "build up" effect in our bodies. There are also concerns of how this agent effects soil and water, possibly killing healthy bacteria that contributes to our eco system.

Fragrance When Fragrance is listed as an ingredient there is often no way of knowing, what is actually in it .  Companies do not have to reveal the chemical that make up a fragrance. Many contain phthalates which are preservatives, that have been found to be hormone altering.  Potential problems from Fragrance additives include: headaches, coughing,  skin rashes, and allergies.  Avoid the use any product with the word “fragrance” in the ingredient list, unless the label states the essential oils that are used.  If you are buying soap from a small producer, ask what type of fragrance they use. A good test: If it does not smell like a plant, spice, or flower it probably is not natural.

Ureas are synthetic ingredients widely used as preservatives and exfoliating ingredients. The American Academy of Dermatology has found Ureas to be a primary cause for contact dermatitis. Urea has also been shown to release formaldehyde. Urea has been restricted for use in cosmetics in Canada. Also known as: Diazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantoin, Sodium hyroxymethylglycinate

Artificial Colors, Dyes & Coal Tar  used as an active ingredient in dandruff shampoos and anti-itch creams. Coal-tar-based dyes such as FD&C Blue 1, used in toothpastes, and FD&C Green 3, used in mouthwash, have been found to be carcinogenic in animal studies. Some artificial colors, such as Blue 1 and Green 3, are carcinogenic. Impurities found in commercial batches of other cosmetic colors have been shown to cause cancer and suspected in attributing to ADHD in children.

Fed up with the cycle of products that never truly helped our skin, and fueled with a cancer diagnosis of a family memmber we set out to create natural cleansing soap that nourished, protected and calmed skin.
